Reading - I cannot say it enough: If you want to be a better reader, you need to READ!
Students are expected to practice their reading almost daily at home. In order to get better at ANYTHING you have to PRACTICE! I wish we could spend all day at school practicing reading, but we do have other subjects to learn about, too.

Need help finding a book at the appropriate grade level?
Try this website: http://lexile.com/fab/ Books are ranked according to reading level. Not sure what your level is? Then think of a book that you can read without too much difficulty and search for it. When you find the reading level of that book, you can find others at the same level. Check the library for books you can borrow.
The students have all taken the NWEA MAP test this year. I have results from the tests and can give you a range for your child's lexile level, too. Just send me an email or give me a call and I will share that info with you.
Accelarated Reader's Book Finder is also a good way to find books at your reading level: http://www.arbookfind.com/

If an assignment is not finished it class (with the exceptions of tests), it should be brought home and finished. If the assignment was completed at school, then there is time to practice other skills. There are pages in the back of the text book for additional practice. Students can also correct their assignments to understand where they made their mistakes.
Students can also never get enough practice at basic facts. Make or buy a set of addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division flash cards and practice for at least ten minutes. I've included a link to print fact triangles, which include both multiplication and division. Students cover one angle of the triangle and use the other two to figure out what number they are covering.
I'll also post some links to websites that can be used for practice. (See the 'Links' tab above.)
Students can log on at home for xtramath.org and complete practice daily.

Science
Most students will complete their work in class. Anything not completed should be finished as homework. Tests occur about every one to two weeks. Students should be practicing their vocabulary words by making flash cards, creating a memory game, or quizzing themselves using the chart on the bottom of the chapter summary page. They can also read and re-read the chapter summary found at the end of each chapter.
Social Studies
Again, most assignments will be completed in class. Students are encouraged to bring in articles from newspapers about current world events to share with the class.
